After more than two years of discussions, input and revisions from your Washington Hospitality Association Government Affairs team, the Washington Board of Health adopted its newest food code on Oct. 13.

The revisions incorporated, with Washington modifications, the 2017 U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Food Code, addressed legislative changes and food safety issues raised by stakeholders to reduce the burden from foodborne disease in Washington.

The state will not implement the new code until March 2022.

Changes to the food code include:

  • Certified Food Protection Manager requirements—not until 2023.
  • Dogs in select indoor and outdoor areas of food establishments.
  • Mobile food units, commissary and plan review requirements.
  • Clarifying allowable bare hand contact with ready-to-eat food.

We expect more details and information to come.
