Seattle approves tax on sweetened beverages

Seattle has joined a growing number of jurisdictions to approve a tax on the distribution of sugary drinks, including soda. In a 7-to-1 vote, the Seattle city council approved the new tax on Monday, which proponents say will reduce consumption of sugary drinks, particularly in lower-income neighborhoods with high rates of childhood obesity and diabetes. Seattle will tax sugary soda — but not diet

The Seattle City Council on Monday approved a new tax on distributors of soda pop and other sugary drinks. Diet soft drinks were exempted. The tax is expected to take effect in early July and add about $1.18 to the cost of a 2-liter bottle of soda. (Seattle Times)
