In the heart of downtown Bellingham stands not only Washington’s oldest diner, but America’s oldest 24-hour diner: The Horseshoe Café.

The charming restaurant is a current member of the Washington Hospitality Association and has served hungry diners for over 135 years. Although it’s no longer open around the clock, the ’Shoe, as it’s affectionately known, continues to welcome late night diners from 9 a.m. to 2 a.m.

The Horseshoe offers a rich history, dating back to the 1850s when settlers were attracted to the growing industries of logging, coal mining and fishing. In 1886, the original Horseshoe Café opened on Holly St. In addition to the restaurant and cocktail lounge, smoking accessories, fishing licenses and tackle, hunting supplies, gifts and novelties were sold.

By the early 1900s, the café had established itself as a local hotspot for great food, fine tobaccos and socializing. In 1950, it became one of the first licensed bars in Whatcom County.

Amazingly, the Horseshoe Café still operates from its location on Holly St.- a place they have been since 1958. From all-day breakfast to a juicy late-night burger, the Horseshoe still features the hearty fare that has filled generations of bellies of Bellingham residents and visitors alike.

The Horseshoe Café is a fine demonstration of Washington’s state’s rich hospitality heritage and an exceptional example of longevity and adaptability in the hospitality industry.
