Seattle chefs Aaron Tekulve and Johnny Courtney have earned national recognition as finalists for the 2026 James Beard Awards, one of the highest honors in the culinary industry.
Leading the story locally is our own Aaron Tekulve, chef and owner of Surrell, a member of the Washington Hospitality Association. Tekulve’s nomination in the Best Chef: Northwest & Pacific category reflects years of dedication to thoughtful, ingredient-driven cuisine and hospitality. His Madison Valley restaurant, Surrell, is known for its refined tasting menus that celebrate seasonal Pacific Northwest ingredients and Washington wine, evolving from a long-running pop-up into one of Seattle’s most distinctive dining experiences.
Tekulve’s journey began in restaurants at a young age and led to a concept rooted in storytelling and local sourcing. His work also reflects the broader mission of Washington’s hospitality community: elevating regional ingredients while creating meaningful guest experiences.
Joining Tekulve as a finalist is Johnny Courtney, chef and owner of Atoma in Wallingford. Atoma has earned acclaim for its modern Pacific Northwest cuisine and inventive seasonal menus.
Winners will be announced at the James Beard Restaurant and Chef Awards ceremony in Chicago on June 15.
