FDA final rule on food traceability

The Food & Drug Administration’s (FDA) Food Traceability Rule (also called ‘FSMA 204’) is intended to quickly identify, and remove from distribution, potentially contaminated foods. The rule is expected to result in fewer foodborne illnesses and deaths.

Beginning July 20, 2028, restaurants that include foods from the ‘traceability list’(Opens in a new window) – foods that are more frequently implicated in foodborne disease outbreaks – will need to meet specific record keeping requirements.

While 2028 is still in the far future, it is in a restaurant’s best interest to begin preparations now.
