Paid Sick Leave: An employer’s guide from L&I

Since January 1, 2018, employers in Washington State have been required to provide paid sick leave to their employees. Legislation passed in 2024 updated the definition of "family member" for whom a worker may use paid sick leave to provide care.

Since January 1, 2018, employers in Washington State have been required to provide paid sick leave to their employees. Legislation passed in 2024 updated the definition of “family member” for whom a worker may use paid sick leave to provide care. It also expanded the circumstances under which paid sick leave can be used. These changes took effect on Jan. 1, 2025.
