OLYMPIA, Wash.—Once again the Washington Restaurant Association Education Foundation (WRAEF) is pleased to congratulate the Oak Harbor High School ProStart culinary team on its fifth place win at the National ProStart Invitational. Oak Harbor won top honors in Washington State’s Boyd’s Coffee ProStart competition in March, advancing to the April 19-21 national competition in Baltimore, Md., where culinary teams from 43 other states prepared meals for the judges.

“We couldn’t be prouder of the ProStart students at Oak Harbor,” said Lyle Hildahl, director of the WRAEF. “Year after year, Washington State’s ProStart students exemplify excellence. Oak Harbor has represented our program on a national level for many years, and this kind of consistency is no small feat. Their placement demonstrates the sincere dedication of their teachers, mentors and students. Oak Harbor’s win at the national level, for a second year in a row, is a hard-earned and well-deserved honor.”

The winning Oak Harbor team consists of seniors Haley Garden, Joanna Leete, Racheal Balasa and Sara Jackson; with culinary teacher Mary Arthur and mentor Scott Fraser of Fraser’s Gourmet Hideaway.

Adhering to the competition rules, the team prepared a menu of Seared Ahi Tuna Niçoise, Rabbit Mousse Stuffed Saddle and Passion Fruit Panna Cotta.

Oak Harbor High School also sent their ProStart Management team to Baltimore. Patrick Salgado, Michelle Lambert and Robert Clemena, represented Washington with Pacific Rim Tapas – a sophisticated and small plates concept with a menu inspired by the natural bounty of the Pacific Rim region.

The Washington Restaurant Association applauds the efforts of ProStart teachers, mentors, and especially the up and coming hospitality professionals found on both of Oak Harbor’s student teams!
