Seattle City Council Approves $50 Million Tax on Jobs

On May 14, the Seattle City Council voted unanimously to tax jobs at businesses with more than $20 million in annual taxable gross receipts in Seattle. This new revenue will be added to existing city spending on affordable housing and homelessness. The legislation, passed in a 9-to-0 vote, will raise $50 million annually through a $275 tax per FTE at businesses above the revenue threshold. Read More…

Seattle Delays Publication of I-124 Rules

On Wednesday, the Seattle Office of Labor Standards announced the delay of the publication of the administrative rules for the Hotel Employees Health & Safety Initiative (HEHS) ordinance. The rules, which were scheduled to be published on May 17, are now expected on May 31. In the announcement, OLS said that additional time was needed to finalize the rules and prepare materials for implementation.

HEHS went into effect in November 2016 shortly after Seattle voters approved Initiative 124, establishing additional safety, health and insurance requirements for Seattle hotel employers. The administrative rules, which are intended to clarify the ordinance, will come one and a half years after the initiative became law. Look for information on the final rules in the Weekly and in Seattle Hotel Association communciations.

Food Allergy Awareness Week Draws Attention to Anaphylaxis

Washington state declared May 13-19 is Food Allergy Awareness week. The Food Allergy Research and Education organization created food allergy awareness week to share information about food allergies and anaphylaxis. Pierce County Lodging Association Growing

The Pierce County Lodging Association (PCLA) held a meeting during the Washington Hospitality Association Hospitality Summit on Monday. The group discussed growing its board and membership again by aligning future meetings with Pierce County Tourism Promotion Area meetings. The next PCLA meeting will be held in August. The Spokane Chapter Golf Benefit will take place on June 5. Funds raised during the tournament will benefit local ProStart high school students, the Inland Northwest Culinary Academy and Feed Spokane—all causes the hospitality industry supports and on which it relies.
