Background:
The Liquor Control Board imposed a 17 percent retail fee on restaurants and bars when purchasing spirits from retailers. Last year, the legislature was only able to remove the fee for former state and contract stores – leaving the majority of other retailers unable to effectively serve our industry. Our bill to remove the fee for all retailers has passed out of the Senate and is ready to be voted on by your state Representatives.

When the bill passed out of the Senate, the coalition agreed to some major compromises to address the concerns of the opponents. ESB 6220 will remove the 17 percent surcharge on restaurants, and:
– Impose a 60 liter per day limit on the amount of spirits a retailer can sell to a restaurant or bar.
– Prohibit a retailer from delivering for 2 years.
– Ensure a distributor fee is collected on private label products

The two large, national distributors have teamed up with the Teamsters Union to attempt to defeat the proposal to bring fair competition back. Your Representatives needs to hear from you. Below is your Representative’s contact information, along with some sample talking points.

Call to Action:
Please call your Representatives and ask them to vote YES on ESB 6220!

Find your legislator here

“Hello, this is (Your Name) from (Your company) located in Rep. (insert your Representative’s name) district.

Please ask Representative (insert your Representative’s name) to vote YES on ESB 6220, which will remove the unfair advantage of the 17 percent fee the Liquor Control Board gave to distributors.

Restaurants need more than one option, in order to get the best customer service and prices.

Two large national, multi-billion dollar, corporations don’t need any more advantage – help small businesses in Washington survive!

Don’t legislate a monopoly – please pass ESB 6220!”
