The Center for Disease Control estimates there are around 48 million cases of foodborne illnesses every year—more than half of these are associated with restaurants or other foodservice institutions. It’s not just a little discomfort and feeling bad—these illnesses can lead to hospitalizations and even death.
This year, the National Restaurant Association is focusing its National Food Safety Month on foodborne illnesses and is discussing not only how to prevent them, but also what to do if you have an outbreak. Restaurants that are associated with an outbreak face a potential loss of their reputations, legal liabilities and major financial consequences.
Most cases of an outbreak stem from unsafe food handling practices. This year, National Food Safety Month will focus on strong food-handler training and management practices. Stop foodborne illnesses before they start!
