The Edmonds City Council passed a resolution Wednesday night stating its intent to ban single-use plastic straws, stirrers and cutlery provided by the food service industry by 2020.

This marks the beginning of the city’s process to replace single-use plastic straws, stirrers and cutlery with environmentally-friendly alternatives. The intent of the resolution, according to city council documents, is to notify citizens and food service businesses including restaurants, grocery stores and event vendors in Edmonds that by early 2020, an ordinance banning single-use plastic straws/stirrers and plastic cutlery will be established.

In addition to implementing the ban in food service establishments, single-use plastic straws, stirrers and cutlery will be banned from city-owned buildings by the end of 2018 and at outdoor festivals and events in Edmonds starting in 2019. A local restaurateur group is monitoring this legislation and will continue to work with your hospitality local government affairs team as the city moves forward with more details.
