HELSINKI (Reuters) – By getting hold of a widely used hotel key card, an attacker could create a master key to unlock any room in the building without leaving a trace, Finnish security researchers said in a study published on Wednesday, solving a 14-year-old mystery. While the researchers have fixed the flaw together with Assa Abloy, the world’s largest lock manufacturer which owns the system in question, the case serves as a wake-up call for the lodging industry to a problem that went undetected for years. Buried deep within the 2,000-plus pages of the Consolidated Appropriations Act signed into law earlier this year are three pages of legislative language that amend the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, or FLSA, of 1938 to prohibit employers — including managers and supervisors — from “keeping” tips received by employees for any purpose. A tough first quarter got a slight bump in March, but it wasn’t enough turn things around. Same-store sales rose slightly at 0.4 percent while industry traffic fell by 2.2 percent for the first quarter of 2018, according to the MillerPulse quarterly report. “Negative traffic is the new norm,” said Larry Miller, co-founder of MillerPulse, a restaurant data and information service.
