Hot Off the Grill: Legislature eases into special session

Gov. Gregoire called a special session of the Legislature beginning this past Tuesday, April 26. The Senate began committee work and floor action Tuesday afternoon, worked through Wednesday and adjourned Thursday afternoon until next Tuesday. Meanwhile, the House has said they will not return until Monday.

Regular session ends, special session slated

Today the 105-day regular legislative session adjourns, two days early, allowing members to go home for the Easter weekend. Lawmakers are working feverishly to complete work on all policy bills that don’t have a bearing on the budget before today’s adjournment. Bills that fail to pass by today will very likely not be eligible for consideration again until next year.

With no budget agreement nailed down, it looks as though a special session of the Washington Legislature a sure thing. Gov. Gregoire is reported to be meeting with legislative leaders today to determine timing for a special session, wherein the state’s $5 billion budget shortfall will be shored up.

Washington Restaurant Association applauds passage of Senate omnibus liquor act into law

The Washington Restaurant Association today praised Gov. Gregoire for signing Senate Bill 5788 which was sponsored by Sen. Steve Conway and Sen. Mike Hewitt. The legislation includes several restaurant provisions, such as the ability for spirits, beer and wine restaurants to sell growlers of tapped beer to go and allows manufacturers of drink mixers to sample their product with liquor.

President Obama last week signed into law H.R. 4, a bill that repeals the requirement that businesses begin filing 1099 information-reporting forms for most business-to-business transactions starting in 2012.
