Tip Pooling Changes on the Horizon – New Deadlines

Today, the U.S. Department of Labor announced it intends to issue a “Notice of Proposed Rulemaking” (NPRM) in August. The NPRM would rescind controversial tip-pooling restrictions which should come as a welcome relief to employers in the hospitality industry. Additionally, the Departments of Labor and Justice have asked for another extension in the National Restaurant Association legal case challenging the tip pooling regulation. So now the DOL/DOJ have until Sept. 8, 2017. These two changes set into motion regulatory action that could aid hospitality employers across the country. However, in Washington because of I-1433, tips still will need to be distributed to employees regardless of what the new rule says about pooling practices. Read more…

 

Seattle Restaurant and Hotel Community Preps for August 1 Primary Election

Seattle Hospitality for Progress has endorsed Jenny Durkan for mayor, Sara Nelson for City Council position 8 and Scott Lindsay for city attorney in the coming election. Seattle Hospitality for Progress is the political arm of the Seattle Hotel Association and Seattle Restaurant Alliance, representing more than 2,500 restaurants and 60 hotels. The Seattle Restaurant Alliance and Seattle Hotel Association are helping host a fundraiser for Nelson at 4:30 p.m. on July 25 at Rumba, 1112 Pike St., in Seattle. Tacoma Restaurants and Hotels Endorse Victoria Woodard for Mayor, Four Council Candidates
The Tacoma restaurant and hotel community has endorsed Victoria Woodard for mayor, Robert Thomas for City Council position 2, Kevin Grossman for City Council position 4, Brian Arnold for City Council position 5 and Meredith Neal for City Council position 6. Woodard’s mayoral campaign has drawn attention of Tacoma-based members of the association, who appreciate the business acumen she gained while working as a CEO for a non-profit as well as her previous experience on the council. Woodard, along with the other endorsed candidates, were identified as business-friendly options who will represent the hospitality industry’s interests and concerns.
