Sunset Clause Added to Spokane Leave Policy
Spokane City Council added a sunset clause to the city sick leave policy on Nov. 14.
The city policy will start Jan. 1, 2017 and end on Dec. 31. 2017.
The statewide initiative begins Jan, 1 2018.
Local Government Affairs Coordinator, Zach Lindahl, as well as several businesses, testified for this amendment after the passage of statewide initiative 1433.
Initially, Spokane would have faced 2 policies, both the state and the city, and would have had to been in compliance with each of them.
With this new amendment businesses will only have to follow one ordinance at a time.
Spokane businesses must certify at THIS link that they are in compliance with the ordinance.
Below are the differences between the state and city policy.
1 hour for 40 hours worked on all employees with 40 hours rolled over to the next year.
Businesses with 9 and under employees get 1 hour for every 30 hours worked with 24 rolled over to the next year.
Businesses with 10 or more employees accrue 1 hour for every 30 worked with 40 hours rolled over to the next year.
Note- If Spokane businesses front-load hours (give employees the required hours at the beginning of the year)
they are not required to keep track of accrual or yearly roll over.
