Wait just a second. You missed one key element. Why would you not get a criminal report and check references on everyone you hire? Even if you decide to hire a person with a criminal history, wouldn’t you want to know what kind of history they have?

There is no profile for a dishonest employee. They come from all walks of life, all shapes, sizes, ethnic backgrounds, economic status and education. The best predictor of the future is past history. Most employees are honest but it only takes one to harm your finances and reputation—damage that may take months or years to remedy.

If you are not screening, you may very well have a career criminal working for you. How many times do you hear these phrases after a tragic circumstance?

  • “Gosh, I never would have guessed.”
  • “He was such a nice man.”
  • “She was always quiet and polite.”
  • “He kept to himself.”
  • “I had no idea she had been in and out of drug rehab.”
  • “I had no idea he was arrested and found guilty of beating his kids.”

DON’T GUESS! It’s equally important that you check with former employers. Make sure the employer is being open with you and not relieved this employee doesn’t work for him anymore. Ask the right questions, or turn it over to professional screeners.

Screening companies don’t tell you who you can or can’t hire. They are only there to provide one more layer of insulation between you and trouble. You still make the decision. When you conduct criminal background searches, it shows good faith and due diligence if you ever have to face litigation. Your insurance company will love you. Check with your provider. The cost of screening may very well be offset by a reduction in your insurance premiums.

Employee screening companies are not created equally. Just as you have a special recipe for eggs Florentine, they have their own way of screening. There are common elements found in most screening companies, but it’s the professional review that makes your screening more thorough. Choose a company that will review their findings before the report is released to you.

Don’t rest on your laurels. Criminals have to work, too! Be diligent, check references and conduct criminal background investigations. Then you can smile and feel confident that you have done your best to protect your business, employees and customers.
